What Happened to the Wool Hat?
by: Amanda Laws aka Monkeegirl Oct. 1 1997
A strange story but hey it's a strange world. Besides, it's a story that must be told. Why? Because it tells what happened to Mike's wool hat!
The Monkees are peacefully sleeping in their beds. The sun has risen, bringing with it another day. And a troubling day for Mike and his friends.
The alarm clock rings and we rise; wipe the sleep out from our eyes. Our shaving razors cold, ooh it stings! "Hey guys can we not go there right now? I'm hungry." Davy asked. "Ok, lets go get dressed" Peter answered.
They all carefully picked out their clothes, got dressed, and headed downstairs. Except for Mike, he remained on the edge of his bed till everybody was gone. Then he got up, walked over to his dresser, opened up his sock drawer and pulled out a key.
Meanwhile downstairs Peter, Davy, and Micky are eating their morning dose of Kellogg's Rice Krispies. "Why does it snap, crackle, and pop when you pour milk on it?" Peter asked in a puzzled voice? "Because Peter, it's telling you to, eat me before I get soggy." Micky said in a big brother type voice. "Really?" "No Peter just eat." Davy said as he put the milk away. Cries came from upstairs.
"Someone's in trouble!" Micky yelled. "This looks like a job for..... MONKEE MEN!" "No Micky." Davy said putting his hand on Micky's shoulder. "Why not?" "Because the costumes are at the cleaners!" "Oh, ok." "Can we go see why Mike's crying any way?" Peter asked in a nervous voice "I don't see why not." Davy exclaimed as he headed up the stairs.
The three run upstairs and into the bedroom to find Mike crying over a small empty chest. Peter goes to his friend and puts his arm around him. "What's wrong Mike?" he asked. "My hat! It's gone!" "But it was locked up, how can it be gone?" Micky asked. Mike was speechless as tears rolled down his face. Peter held him tighter. Micky and Davy started searching the room. "Hat? Hat? Hello? Hat? Are you under here hat?" Micky said as he looked under the beds.
Micky and Davy searched the pad top to bottom as Peter tried desperately to comfort Mike. But he sat on the couch starting into space. "Man this is a drag. Look at him. He's falling to pieces in front of us, and there's nothing we can do!" "Maybe there is Davy!" Peter said as he jumped up and ran upstairs.
Peter returned with his piggy bank and a hammer. "Peter please don't be ha-" Peter quickly interrupted "Now now David not one more word, finding a new hat for Mike is more important than buying a new Teddy bear!"
The guys got Mike to the car and took him to the shopping center. They looked for hours. They must must have looked at thousands of hats. But none of them could replace Mike's precious wool hat. "Well we've been to every store here and no new hat! Can we go home now?" Micky whined. "No! We won't leave until Mike buys something!" Peter declared. Mike looked at the money in his hand then smiled at Peter. "Go home you guys. I know what I'm gonna buy!" "He speaks!" Micky and Davy say as they jump up and down. Mike hugs Peter and runs off. "See ya at home."
Mike returned home. "Hey Mike!" Micky yelled. "What, did you get your hat gift wrapped?" Mike stood there with a smile on his face and a shiny red box with a shiny red bow in his hands. He walked over and sat down by Peter. "Here ya go good buddy!" he said in the proudest tone he could ever use.
Peter sat and looked at the box in awe. "Well open it!" Peter opened the box to find a brown fuzzy Teddy bear staring up at him. Peter gave Mike a hug as a tear ran down his cheek. "I love ya man" "Me too good buddy!"
"Well it's late. Let's call it a night. Ok?" Davy asked. "Ok!" Mike replied. Mike and Davy went upstairs. Micky started up the stairs. "Hey Micky." "Ya Pete?" "Can I talk to you?" "Sure Pete!" Micky came back down the stairs and sat down next to Peter. "Ya promise not to tell anyone?" "Ya ... What's wrong?" "I took Mike's hat." "What? You must be joking!" "Isn't that Davy's line?" asked Peter. "Ya, but he's not here." Peter picked up the Teddy bear. "Why did you take it?" "Well actually I borrowed it. I wore it to a party last night. I thought if I wore it girls would wanna talk to me. And people would give me the respect they give Mike!" "Did it work?" Micky asked "No. I lost it not too long after I got there. I spent the night looking for it. So nobody even noticed me." "Oh Peter. You don't need a hat to be noticed or get respect!" "Ya I found that out the hard way. I just hoped I could tell him before he found out on his own." "Why didn't ya tell him?" "When I saw him crying I was afraid to." "Don't worry Pete. It's our secret!" "Thanks." "Now, let's go to bed."
Peter and Micky went to bed. Micky kept his word never to tell Peter's secret. Mike kept a special place in his heart for his beloved wool hat. Davy - well he still looks for the hat now and then; or at least a look alike. Peter over time bought Mike some baseball caps. Which are the very ones you see Mike wear today. And the Teddy bear - Peter named him "Mike" and never leaves home without him!
