So where do I start to explain why I so boldly say NO? Lets start with why I feel so passionate about it.I love the Monkees, the music, the show and the joy they bring to my life. The Monkees are my thing, I know alot about Monkees and take pride in saying "I like The Monkees". I could go on and on about my Monkee experiences and so forth, its clear I have a Monkee passion, So il get onto with why, I don't want to see a "New Monkees" If your a fan and you mention The Monkees, either people don't know (if they are the younger crowd) who yer talking about, and if they do..they think the 4 cute guys from the 60s with the crazy TV show.. Now imagine a world where you mentioned The Monkees, and some crazed 14 year old blond bimbo teenie bopper who last week thought Nsync was the best band ever, getting excited she found another Monkees fan and start to asked you questions about some.. "Jonathan" or "Jack" or some crazy name..that has nothing to do with the original Monkees at all! Then there will be the mess of these poor girls finding out this isn't a new original thing, the flood "New Monkees" invasion online and in the stores. Do they plan to use the same logo and taint that as well? And am I the only one that has knowledge of these 4 wackos? "The New Monkees" from 1987?
We've been down this road before people! Yeah things are a tad different with the Reality TV boom,
but I don't know if anyone else noticed, but the male pop star group things dieing..
Unless yer one of those brain dead 14 year old girls then yer still buying the "boy band buzz" even though the "boys" are all grown up.Now back to the 1987 "New Monkees", check this out..after Micky, Davy & Peter reformed, put out "Pool It" and MTV did a run of the TV Series, the original brains behind the plot sat up and decided to try again. They originally asked "The Elvis Brothers" to play the parts, they wisely turned it down. A casting call was had, 4 guys were picked and that was that. The album was a bust, the show was a bust and all quickly faded away. So your starting to wonder why you even bothered to read this? As time goes on..people always try and tell the story of the Monkees. They always miss out on something important, try to hint at things that werent even there, add to the story, change the story to the point where the Monkees story is as fictional as people say the band was. And even now people don't get, that they all had musical talent, among the things true fans know and see. So what sort of horror are we in for? Well if the VH1 movie (yeah, il be educating people about that one soon enough) is any glimpse into the future of the Monkees franchise.Let alone the casting call I read about looking for "Young Talented English Artists/Actors" then were possibly looking at something like this. (see photo) Something that resembles our Monkees. Was I the only that read how teen aged girls in Canada thought that the
4 actors seen in this photo, were THE MONKEES and wanted to see concerts? And more movies or a tv show? I held my breath at that, the thought that they could have taken them 4 actors and cashed in..except this time "The Monkees" wouldn't have been playing their own music or singing. Don't get me wrong, despite the fact the VH1 movie had to many mistakes
to the story, the actors did a good job.Does anyone know anything about the people wanting to run "The New Monkees"? Heres a lil for you The British producer of "Pop Idol" which became "American Idol" here, Simon Fuller, contacted NBC who originally showed The Monkees. What is Simon credited for? The Spice Girls.. ack! What has this man done? HE BOUGHT THE MONKEES! Rhino said they wouldn't sell, seems they did. So some guy bought the right to the Monkees name and concept and will ruin them. Simon says he has studied all The Monkees as research, and hopes to keep the feel of the original show, while updating it, steeping it with pop culture references and the like, and "possibly" using new technology to enhance the show. So now il sit back want watch in horror as The Monkees name and image will be ruined..Il forever love The Monkees, and remain loyal to the original, But I DONT support the making of a "New Monkees" -Monkeegirl |
