'Aida' a visual delight, an auditory assault
From: St. Petersburg Times, FL
TAMPA -- Aida is a mechanical marvel, with a stunning visual package that sets the benchmark for theatrical design, and the Elton John score has the punch and soulfulness that his fans love.

But anyone used to the dulcet tones of a traditional musical might be well-advised to pack earplugs. Disney's cartoony take on the Verdi opera, playing at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, is the loudest show ever. It makes The Who's Tommy sound like a soft serenade.

One good thing about the ear-splitting volume is that it renders lyricist Tim Rice's efforts all but unintelligible. Exhibit A in the case against Rice comes from the kicky clotheshorse number by Amneris, My Strongest Suit:

I would rather wear a barrel

Than conservative apparel.

Aaargh! And that's just one of many lame rhymes. In some ways, though, pointless lyrics don't matter when John's music is so well-crafted and catchy. The songs also have the advantage of being familiar knockoffs from his catalog of pop hits.

For a Honky Cat-style rocker, there's Like Father Like Son. For a syrupy anthem along the lines of Candle in the Wind, there's the show's theme song, Elaborate Lives. For a touching ballad like Your Song, there's the Amneris solo, I Know the Truth.

John's hook-laden score draws attention from the sometimes incoherent melodrama of Aida's book, credited to no fewer than three writers, including director Robert Falls.

Falls has assembled a decent cast, led by Paulette Ivory as the Nubian slave princess who falls in love with the Egyptian army commander, Radames. Ivory is a striking presence with a voice to match in powerhouse numbers Easy as Life and The Gods Love Nubia. She also has a droll way with a punch line, as a connoisseur of thread count in the running fashion gag.

Jeremy Kushnier is more the whiny rock troubadour than the operatic heavyweight you might expect for Radames, but he establishes a gripping relationship with Ivory's Aida, which reaches a peak in their duet Written in the Stars.

As the third side of the triangle, Amneris, Lisa Brescia combines camp and surprising authenticity as the airhead Egyptian princess who becomes a melancholy heroine of some depth.

Micky Dolenz, the one-time Monkees drummer, recently joined the company as Radames' father, the conspiratorial Zoser, and he appears to be feeling his way into the role. His first act number with a robotic chorus line, Another Pyramid, was a mess in Tuesday's performance. Wayne Cilento's choreography for the show is wildly uneven, with the best dancing done by the Nubians.

Aida is memorable for its design. Bob Crowley won a Tony Award for his scenic design (he also did the costumes), as did Natasha Katz for her lighting, and they seamlessly meshed to create one crisply defined stage picture after another.

Highlights include the ingenious museum set that bookends the ancient Egypt story, Amneris' fantastic wedding gown and glamorous shafts of light that crisscross the stage.

This is one show where the audience leaves buzzing about the scenery, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Micky Dolenz Joins the US Tour of Elton John & Tim Rice's AIDA
From: http://disney.go.com/disneytheatrical/news/aida/
Micky Dolenz, lead singer of the group The Monkees, will play the role of Zoser in the National Tour of Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA, Disney's Tony Award®-winning musical love story. Dolenz's first performance in the role will be February 25, 2003 in Ft. Myers, FL. He began rehearsal with the company on January 31. "I am thrilled to be working with so many talented people on such a prestigious project," said Dolenz.

In addition to the sixties TV show that made the group famous, Micky Dolenz's theatrical work includes the national touring company of "Grease" (Vince Fontaine), "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum" (Pseudolus), Harry Nilsson's "The Point" (The Count's Kid) and "Tom Sawyer" (Huckleberry Finn). Micky also wrote the book for, and directed, "Bugsy Malone" on the London stage. He has continued to tour over the years as a solo artist, and with The Monkees.

Dolenz will play the role of Zoser, the father of the Egyptian Captain Radames. He will join the cast of the national tour which includes London-born Paulette Ivory as Aida, Jeremy Kushnier as Radames, and Lisa Brescia as Amneris.

Based on an ancient legend, Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA is a musical love story bursting with contemporary energy that tells the story of two star-crossed lovers on the banks of the Nile. AIDA features new music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice, their first effort since writing THE LION KING together. The production, which received four 2000 Tony® Awards, opened on Broadway at the Palace Theatre on March 23, 2000 and has been playing to capacity audiences ever since. The National Tour has been touring since April 2001. Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, which operates under the direction of Thomas Schumacher.

Dolenz will begin the role of Zoser for the Ft. Myers, FL engagement, February 25 - March 2. Other cities on the tour include Tampa, FL (March 4 - 15); Birmingham, AL (March 18 - March 23); Louisville, KY (March 25 - April 6); Akron, OH (April 15 - 20); Columbus, OH (April 22 - May 4).

From "The Wave":
The Fab Four (that is, the "fabricated" four) known as The Monkees pioneered the field of corporate-created pop acts that continues to this day (read: New Kids on the Block, Boyz II Men, Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, etc.). But what makes The Monkees stand apart from their contrived successors is that they actually possess a morsel of musical talent and stage appeal. How else do you explain the January 28 CD release of "The Monkees - Live Summer Tour" more than 30 years after the group's official break up? Recorded live during a reunion concert in August 2001, "Live Summer Tour" is a surprisingly pleasant reminder of a simpler time when bubble gum pop was cool, the Volkswagon Beetle wasn't annoying and we killed the View Cong instead of Al Qauda.

Article!
In the article posted Feb 3, 2003- "Pop gets its crackle, snap back " By RANDY LEWIS, LOS ANGELES TIMES
The writer talked about what some artists today are doing, looking to the past. Song by artists like singer Toby Keith and the Transplants, and Eminem, "features the kind of snaps, crackles and pops that marred the bygone era of vinyl records. But these noises were not caused by wear, tear or an inebriated party guest bumping into a phonograph. They were put there deliberately. "
They go on to list and compair differant artists that have done it in the past
The Monkees are mentioned as follows in regards to the effect:
The Monkees went a step further in 1968 with the song "Magnolia Simms," which sounded as if the record was skipping and the needle was being carelessly dragged across the grooves.

Monkees DVD Box Set
According to Maggie McManus (Monkee Business Fanzine), the Monkees DVD Box Set is *NOT* coming out January 28 as it says on PlayCentric's site.
Rhino's video department does not have a confirmed date, but they offered a tentative date of April 22, which could change to a later date still between now and then. Because the release date is so far off, they have little in the way of details on the "extras". It'll be 6 discs priced at $89.95, and some "guests" have already recorded commentary tracks for certain episodes. The Season 2 box is expected sometime between August and November.

Today in Music: a look back at pop music
Its a few days late, but Dec 5 1966, The Monkees' "I'm A Believer" was released.

Article: Peace and love anthems of the '60s return
In the Article by Chuk Raasch, on usatadoday.com, mention The Monkees. The article is about how the great classics of the 60s, that at that time ment things of youth and innocents, peace and love now are being used to sell things during the holiday reason.
More and more TV ads are hijacking '60s anthems to sell cars, jeans, beer and other assorted consumables.
The article goes on to list many examples of good songs being miss used.. and at the end, mentions the Monkees. Three decades ago, the Monkees mocked the cookie-cutter banality of "status symbol land" in the suburbs.

Today, "Pleasant Valley Sunday" may just be playing on the oldies station in a good many SUVs headed to the mall.

Why cant they leave a good thing alone?
According to USA Today:
NBC is negotiating for a real-life remake of the late-1960s Monkees TV series, in which four newcomers -- cast through an on-camera audition -- would live together in a house and offer viewers a goofy mix of comedy and music.
I say just leave it be! The Monkees cant be reproduced, dont even try!

Here is a further artical posted Tue Jul 23, 4:04 AM ET By Michael Schneider at Yahoo News

Hey, hey, "The Monkees" may be returning to NBC.

The network is in discussions with the creator of "American Idol" to revive the format, featuring a new American boy band in the roles made famous by Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork. NBC would ready the project for a fall 2003 launch.

Simon Fuller, who also created and managed the Spice Girls ( news - web sites), has secured rights to the "Monkees" concept and name. "The Monkees" also served as inspiration for Fuller's teen band SClub7, a pop group of seven members who starred in their own international TV show, released a number of hit records in the U.K. and even designed their own clothing line.

SClub7 has sold 10 million albums worldwide.

The updated "Monkees" would include sketch comedy and music elements featuring four handpicked male stars, similar to the original series, which aired on NBC from 1966 to 1968.

The original show continues to hold cult status, while two original members are touring under the Monkees moniker. "The Monkees" was previously revived in 1987 as the short-lived syndicated comedy "The New Monkees."

Fuller currently serves as an executive producer on Fox's hit reality series "American Idol." The original U.K. format, "Pop Idols," was created by Fuller's 19 Entertainment banner.

Micky & Davy did an interview for CNN's "Music on the Road", here is a part of the highlight of the interview..
CNN: Fellow Monkees Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork aren't touring with you guys. Is that weird?
Micky: It's a little bit like Crosby, Stills, Nash and sometimes Young. That's the sensibility. Peter was out with us just a few months ago, but decided he wanted to pursue his blues music. And Mike was out with us a few years ago on tour in England. It's just the case when they feel like coming in and dipping into it, they do.
Davy: Micky, Mike, Peter and Davy, that's the Monkees. Peter is making his own music, Mike writes and produces, and Micky and I sing Monkee tunes. As for reminiscing with our original fans, we just want to make music. We just want to have a good time. We just want to travel and learn and just enjoy ourselves and that's why we're on the road.

Not sure where this came from but check it out:
It pays to have friends in the business. When As the World Turns wanted a well-known name to preside over an upcoming wedding, Peter Noone (Paddington) suggested his good friend, teen idol-turned TV-producer Micky Dolenz. "He was the best man for the job," exclaims Noone. Dolenz, a member of the sixties TV musical quartet the Monkees, agreed to take on the role, as long as he didn't have to play himself. "I turn them down," says Dolenz of self-appearances. "I told [ATWT] from day one, 'Please, no Monkees references, because then it becomes a sketch... and this show is grounded in some kind of reality.'" To play the English vicar, Dolenz, a Los Angeles native, has adopted a British accent. "There are some very exotic and eccentric characters in the different parts of England," he shares. "It's a composite a bunch of people that I've met there." Dolenz is keeping mum on whether the couple he is set to marry actually makes it through the ceremony. "I ain't going to tell ya," he declares in his stage persona's voice. "Maybe I'm the one that marries... and Peter is my son!" Dolenz is already familiar with the daytime format. His daughter, Ami, starred on General Hospital. "I've always been fascinated at the speed at which they produce [daytime]," shares Dolenz, who has directed live sitcoms in England. The ATWT crew seems fascinated by Dolenz; he's been signing a lot of autographs. "Maybe they'll create a role for the vicar," he suggests with a chuckle, "with all the marriages that happen on a soap." Dolenz premieres on May 31.

New tour dates

Wen, 11 Oct 2000
Micky was mentioned in TV guide (Oct 9-14 issue) Under "Cheers and Jeers" A "Jeers" goes out to Rick Springfield for appearing on the VH1 Behind the Music Anniversary Special. The "Jeer" reads as follows"
Jeers to a dubious judgment. Just what exactly was ex-pop idol Rick Springfield thinking when kept his promise to appear on VH1's deliriously juicy "Behind the Music Anniversary Special'? Honoring commitments is all well and good, but Springfield had to know that the subject of his September 18 arrest on a domestic assault charge would be prime fodder for the September 24 program. Talk about a classic 'Behind the Music Moment', A soft spoken Springfield, having already spent a night in jail, faced questions from host Kathy Griffin, while fellow guest (and former Monkee) Mickey Dolenz looked on. Dolenz is hoping to produce a series starring Springfield, but the funniest Monkee couldn't help himself when Springfield was asked what he has coming up. "Indictment?' quipped Dolenz. Hey, it's his joke, not ours!
They spelled Micky wrong, but we wont hold it agianst them :)

Micky Dolenz gets a quick mention on the "Kid Stars" episode of VH1's "Where Are They Now?" series. Featured kid star Brandon Cruz says a few words about Micky and how the two of them collaborated on a track(s?) for Cruz's CD.
Sat, 02 Sep 2000
There is a 1/2 page 'celebrity classroom' story in the new issue of the "National Enquirer" about Micky titled "Micky Dolenz:The Monkee Who Bit Me In School" It's an article submitted by a woman who attended school with Micky-she says in 6th grade he was always joking around, but very full of himself because of 'Circus Boy'. One day he began teasing her (she doesn't remember what it was about) and wouldn't stop, so she told him he smelled like Bimbo. He then grabbed her forearm and bit her hard. She screamed but he laughed and ran away. She did graduate from high school with him and didn't know what happened to him until she saw him on 'The Monkees'. No comment from Micky-there is a small, recent picture of Micky now, a small picture of him from 6th grade, a small picture of the woman from 6th grade and a group picture of the Monkees.
"Mojo" (with the Who on the cover) features a review of the "HQ Sessions" box set, a brief Micky Dolenz interview, an interview with julie driscoll including her memories of 33+1/3, a picture of Micky and Samantha on "top of the pops", and reviews of the reissued Nilsson cd's.
